Best Places to Snowmobile in the US

Snowmobiling is arguably one of the best sports to undertake if you love to be isolated in nature. Some of the best snowmobiling destinations in the United States may be right around the corner from you while others are a bit more remote. Here are a few out-of-the way snowmobiling locations around the country.

Missoula, MT, has more than just snow sports to offer the seasoned traveler. From taking in a documentary film festival to floating on one of the three rivers, there's no shortage of indoor and outdoor entertainment for people of all ages. But for those of you looking to explore the outdoors on a snow vehicle, Missoula is perhaps one of the best hidden jewels for snowmobilers in the Western United States. The forested area surrounding Missoula is home to numerous snowmobiling destinations:

-Lolo Pass. Located on U.S. Highway 12 at the Montana-Idaho border just 45 miles southwest of Missoula.

-Haugan. 90 miles west of Missoula on I-90 and 110 miles east of Spokane, Haugan sits on the I-90 in northwestern Montana.

-Mission Mountains. The Mission Mountains are located in western Montana (Rona) between Missoula and Kalispell on U.S. Highway 93.

-Seeley Lake. Just 15 miles north of junction 83 and 200 in western Montana.

Upper Peninsula, MI, is where mid-westerners explore the deep snows of the U.P., or Upper Peninsula, area. With more than 3,000 miles of snowmobile trails to explore, the winter months are a popular time to visit this destination. The season is characterized by deep snow and chilly temperatures and typically runs from December through the spring months.

The plateau at Tug Hill, NY, is known by ATV riders who visit in the summer to take advantage of its extensive trail system. In the winter months, the plateau is blanketed in snow from the lake storm roll-offs, making it a perfect snowmobile destination. Visitors will find welcome accommodations in the campgrounds and lodge-style inns that make this a viable sled resort destination.

Cold weather can present its own challenges and you do not want to be close to all the fun and forget something important. No matter where you go, be safe on the snow with a good quality, pre-charged snowmobile battery. In many cases, you can also use motorcycle batteries as spares for your snowmobile batteries. Check with your authorized dealer to make sure they're safe for use in both recreational vehicles.
