Bounty Hunter Gold Digger Metal Detector - Why Is This Detector Good for a New Hobbyist?

The Bounty Hunter metal detectors are an excellent choice for someone who wants to try out the hobby of metal detecting. Bounty Hunter has been in the business of making detectors for more than 40 years. They have a reputation of making a great product at an affordable price.

The Gold Digger metal detector is a great one for someone who has a need for a detector, a need to:

• Find property markers

• Find a lost ring

• Find a lost key

• Try out the hobby

• Find some money

• Find buried treasure

Why is the Gold Digger a good one? You can buy a new one on Amazon for under $80, it is easy to use, reliable and durable. Sure, you can spend more money and upgrade but if you are not sure that you will like the sport or only wanting to find a ring, there is no need to spend the extra money.

The best place to learn your machine is in your own back yard or a friend's or relative's back yard. The instructions that come with it are easy to follow. It covers how to assemble it, how the unit works and how to use it. You'll be surprised at the amount of coins, laying out there, that are waiting to be found. You'll also find nails, screws, and foil.

The unit comes with headphones that will allow you to hear the subtle differences in the tones the detector emits. With practice you can tell the difference between the nails and foil to the coins and gold rings. This will save a lot of digging in the long run. The headphones also saves on battery life, it uses two nine volt batteries

This detector has automatic ground balancing, which means that it adjusts itself to different ground conditions. You can go from hard ground to the beach without having to make any manual changes. This is a great improvement in metal detectors.

The reviews on Amazon have an average rating of 4 stars out of 5 with 51 people writing the reviews. Many of the reviewers purchased the detector for their children. The kids are out finding coins and treasures.

However, as with any tool, it takes practice and patience to get proficient with it. You will dig up some trash at first so don't get frustrated. Take the trash with you to dispose of later so when you go over the same ground later there will be less junk to dig up. Please, fill in the holes that you dig and if you're on private property get permission to be there first.

The Bounty Hunter Gold Digger Metal Detector is a good one for beginners because of its low price, its ease of use and the improvements in the electronics built into the detector.

A Little About Metal Detector Frequency

Metal detector frequency is measured in kilo hertz (kHz). Kilo is a unit prefix in the metric system denoting multiplication of the unit by one thousand. One kilogram equals 1000 grams. Relating to metal detectors, a metal detector that has a 6 kHz frequency will transmit and receive 6,000 times per second. A metal detector with a frequency of 25.5 kHz will transmit and receive 25,500 times per second and so on.

Very low frequency (VLF), also known as induction balance, is probably the most popular detector technology in use today. The lower a metal detector's frequency, the deeper it can read, however, sensitivity to small items is reduced. The higher the frequency the more shallow it reads and it is more sensitive.

The consensus is that a low frequency detector is more sensitive to silver and copper, can detect items deeper and is better at rejecting the 'trash' metal. If you want to hunt for coins, and relics the low frequency detector is the best for that. Lower frequencies have a longer wavelength that's further apart making them more receptive to higher energy targets. Lower frequencies tend to do better in mineralized ground, but are not as sensitive to small targets. If your detector is a general purpose detector it probably operates at a lower frequency.

Higher frequencies have a shorter wavelength that is closer together. Higher frequency detectors are more sensitive to small metals and natural gold. However, they have difficulties with discriminating against ferrous (of iron) and nonferrous (not of iron) metals. Their sensitivity to small metals makes them tedious to use around trashy areas. Most gold prospecting detectors operate at higher frequencies.

If you're hunting for natural gold and small metals you would use a higher frequency detector. The problem is you will also pick up nonferrous metals like iron. It is best to stay away from trashy areas with these.

Going out and working with your metal detector and playing with the different frequencies will help you understand and be better able to determine what and how your particular metal detector's frequency detects what it does. There is a lot more you will be playing around with, testing, trying and tweaking as you go along. That's how you get to know your detector. Keep plugging away and you will know your detector like your best friend. Detector frequency is only a small part of the equation. Have fun and Happy Treasure Hunting!

Let's Go Metal Detecting - Where Should We Go?

Finding good places to go metal detecting can be difficult. Depending on your location dig sites can be a difficult task. There may not be any shorelines where you live and it may be hard to find private properties where the owner is willing to allow access to metal detecting, but with a little bit of thought and research, you can find numerous places to look, without traveling too far.

PARKS: Are there any parks in your area? Parks are a great place to find treasures, however gaining access to an area park may be more challenging. If the park is historical then it is doubtful that any metal detecting will be allowed. Check anyway, it doesn't hurt. If you are in an area that has a non-historical park check with the local authorities. Your local Parks & Rec department can help with information. You may need a permit. This permit will probably cost you a small fee, but is probably well worth the trouble. If you're looking for information go to FMDAC (Federation of Metal Detector and Archaeological Clubs, Inc.). They have a web page outlines state laws and regulation in regards to metal detecting and lots of other useful information.
PLAYGROUNDS: Children parks are a good place to hunt. Around swings, jungle gyms, and teeter totters are great places to look. Park benches, hiking trails, shaded areas are all good places too. You may not find a gold bounty, you're sure to find lost jewelry, and coins.
PRIVATE PROPERTY: There are lots of homes in your area, I'm sure, that have been around a long time. Some for centuries. These are great places to find treasures. Your own back yard perhaps? In any event, always get permission. You don't want to be arrested for trespassing. Just think of the history in those back yards.
ROADS AND HIGHWAYS: One spot most people don't think about is along highways in the ditch areas. Things are falling off fingers, out of hands and bags from car windows. I personally know 5 people who lost their high school ring out a car window. Research the area and find out where the old roads were. There are lots of old roads that have been closed where a super highway was constructed.
FARM FIELDS: Farm fields are also good places to hunt. Going after a good rain or after the ground has been tilled is a good idea. Before going get permission from the farmer. Written permission is the best practice.
RIVERBANKS: Along riverbanks where things have washed up. Around old marinas or fishing spots.

These are just a few places to give you some ideas. I'm sure you will be able to come up with some of your own. Just be sure to do your research, get permission and always be a courteous treasure hunter. Leave the area like you found it. As always, have fun and find treasure.

Happy Treasure Hunting!

What Is a Metal Detector and How Does It Work?

What do you think of when you think of a Metal Detector? Possibly combing the beach with a funny looking pole with a circle on the end looking for coins, jewelry, and other precious metals come to mind. Maybe you think of security guards in the court house or at the airport scanning visitors and travelers as they enter.

These scenarios would both be right. We rely on the ability of metal detectors to keep our schools, government buildings, sporting events, etc. safe from hidden weapons in the wrong hands.

A consumer metal detector is a piece of equipment allowing people the opportunity to discover coins, relics, treasures and a lot of worthless junk metal that may be hidden just a few inches beneath the ground. Lots of people are joining the quest for treasure using a metal detector, but have you ever wondered how the metal detector works?

Here is a nutshell analogy of how the metal detector works.

A consumer metal detector is light weight consisting of a control box, shaft, a search coil and possibly a stabilizer.

The control box contains the circuitry, controls, speaker, batteries and microprocessor. The shaft joins the control box and the coil. Usually it can be adjusted to the height and comfort of the user. The search coil senses the metal and sends the signal to the control box. The search coil is sometimes known as the head, loop or antenna. The stabilizer (optional) is used to keep the unit steady as you sweep it back and forth. Most systems also have a jack for connecting headphones,

Using a metal detector consists of turning the unit on and moving it slowly back and forth over a small area in front of you. A signal occurs when a target is recognized. Some metal detectors have a display that lets you know what type of metal is being detected and how deep the target is in the ground.

Metal detectors use one of three technologies.

Very low frequency(VLF)Pulse induction(PI)Beat-frequency oscillation(BFO)

The first and most common is "VLF" or very low frequency which is also known as induction balance. Not as common is the technology based on pulse induction (PI). Unlike VLF, PI systems use a single coil as both transmitter and receiver, or they may have two or even three coils working together.

The most basic technology is called beat-frequency oscillator (BFO). This system uses two coils of wire. One large coil is in the search head, and a smaller coil is located inside the control box.

This is only a bare bones explanation of the makings of a metal detector. I believe that understanding the basics of how something works helps one become more adept in their treasure hunting. Research the different types of detectors and decide which one is best for your needs.
