What Spearfishing Wetsuit Should I Choose?

There are hundreds of different spearfishing wetsuits to choose from in the marketplace so how do you know which one is right for you? How do you know what colour, thickness, cut, fabric or size to select? And what do price and brands have to do with quality?

What seems like a very complicated decision - "what wetsuit to choose?" - becomes a bit more understandable when you look at how neoprene fabric is manufactured. Neoprene is made from foaming synthetic rubber with nitrogen gas while it is still in liquid form, before it is set. These trapped bubbles are what helps keep the warmth within the suit. Of course the thicker the suit, the warmer it will be, but also the more buoyant it becomes, as there is more gas trapped in there, so extra weights are needed. For tropical regions you may only want a suit of 1mm to 1.5mm thickness, but divers in the cold waters may require 5 to 7mm suits to keep warm. Everyone else will want something in between, depending on the person, the time of year, exact location, depth and the amount of time spent in the water, etc.

Better quality neoprenes have smaller bubbles of nitrogen and more synthetic rubber material, so generally the heavier a suit feels for its thickness, the better the quality of neoprene. Poorer quality wesuits have large bubbles in them, so they will seem light for their thickness. These large bubbles easily explode when diving, so very quickly these suits compact and lose their thickness and effectiveness as wetsuits. Don't be fooled - it may seem like you are getting a bargain, but a wetsuit made of cheap quality neoprene simply will not last very long. You will save in the long run in not having to replace your wet suit as often, by investing a little bit more into a quality neoprene suit.

Additionally, neoprene fabric used in wetsuits can have various finishes. Smoothskin or closed cell means it has the skin that sets on the outside of the synthetic foam rubber. This is very smooth and quite soft yet still fairly tough, it will seal pretty well against the skin. It is often used for the inside seals around the wrists, ankles and face as it seals yet will not get damaged too easily. A whole wetsuit, with a complete closed or smoothcell finish on the outside, is great for extra warmth, especially if you want to keep out the wind when travelling between dive sites. Smoothskin also gives smoother, slicker movement through the water. Sometimes the neoprene is painted to add colour or pattern.

Imagine cutting the skin of the foam rubber to reveal all the bubbly bits, this is what opencell means. The finish is generally used on the inside of suits, is very soft and flexible and it grips and seals extremely well against the skin. It sticks to the skin, so not allowing any pockets of water to get in or move around and disturb the warmth. Opencell finish makes for an extremely comfortable and warm wetsuit, particularly as the joins are glued so there is no stitching against the skin. But this finish is very soft and can be damaged by your nails, so make sure you are careful when putting on and removing your suit and keep toe and fingernails short. You will also need to use lubrication to put on your suit.

The most commonly available finish on wetsuits is to have a knitted fabric glued to the outside of the neoprene. Most commonly this is nylon, sometimes lycra or other fabrics are used. Neoprene with coatings of fabric will be very durable, but not as flexible, stretchable or comfortable. The seams will be stitched to protect the edges of the fabric from unravelling. Wetsuits with fabric coating inside won't be as warm as uncoated, as the knitted fabric doesn't stick to the skin as well on the inside so can allow some water to get inside the suit. They are also not windproof, but can take a lot more wear and tear than uncoated neoprene and don't need lubrication. Knitted fabric on the outside of the suit will protect the neoprene and give pattern and colour to the wetsuit.

Finally, slick coatings - are mostly silver or gold finishes applied to opencell insides of suits. These are a great feature and worth paying extra for. The advantages are you will combine most of the comfort, softness and flexibility of an opencell finish, with gaining the added warmth of closed cell, while achieving a finish that is much tougher and doesn't always require lubrication. They will have glued seams as well for comfort.

Along with quality, thickness and finishes of the neoprene, the style and cut of a wetsuit need to be considered. A one piece suit is simple, quick and easy to put on, usually with a back zipper. But it won't be as warm as a two piece suit.

Look at the features of a suit, not just the fancy patterns or colours to help you make your decision. Hood attached jackets, with face seals, keep the head protected and keeps the whole body warmer by allowing less water inside the suit. A jacket with a beaver tail stops the jacket from riding up and should have good quality closures that will last. Shaping through the body means the suit will sit tighter and fit better, thus allowing less water inside. Wrist and ankle seals keep legs and sleeves in place and help to keep water out of the suit. Preformed or shaped elbows and knees provide better fit through the arms and legs, so keeping them warmer. Long john pants give a bit of extra warmth on the chest but high waist pants can be easier to put on and off. Abrasive resistant fabrics or coatings on the elbow, arm, knee or leg area will help to prolong the life of your suit. Padded, slip and abrasive resistant chest loading pads are a fantastic feature for a spearfishing wetsuit to protect and make speargun loading easier on your chest.

Which Map? How to Choose the Right Ordnance Survey (OS) Map

The walk location is decided, you know how long you want to be out for and you've brushed up on your map reading skills. It's time to get a map and plot the route. In the UK this means using an Ordnance Survey map which shows all the footpaths, features and topographic detail you will need to complete any forray into the countryside safely and successfully. There is not just one Ordnance Survey map for each area however but a choice of different series of maps, all showing different levels of detail, scales or usages. So how do you select the right Ordnance Survey map for your walk? Here are a few pointers to help you choose:

Select the correct map for your walk:

You have two main choices of paper map - the Ordnance Survey (OS) Explorer or the Ordnance (OS) Landranger. Other maps are available such as street atlases, historical or specialised activity maps but for hiking or walking you will need one of the above in order to provide enough detail to navigate from.

The OS Explorer map series is the most popular choice and an essential for longer or more complex walks or those going off the beaten track. It is highly detailed and shows all rights of way, footpaths, landscape and interest features and contours. Every house, public facility or point of interest is covered giving you all the tools you need to locate yourself as well as finding that nearest pub for a drink after a hard days walking! The scale is 1:25000 - that is 1cm on the map equates to 250m on the ground (4cm per km or 2 1/2 inches to a mile)

The OS Landranger map series covers a wider area with a scale of 1:50000 (that's 1cm on the map to every 500m on the ground, 2cm per km or 1 1/4 inches to the mile). This makes it handy for planning a day out over a broader area and for getting a good picture of where you are going and it shows the main footpaths and rights of way as well as tourist information and points of interest. However it doesn't contain as much detail as the OS Explorer range and if you are going off into the wilds you will need the detail of the Explorer map to navigate with confidence.

There are other options worth knowing about: firstly the Active Maps which come in both Landranger and Explorer ranges and have a laminated, waterproof cover to protect your map from the rain and elements when out and about; secondly there are the custom-made maps which allow you to choose where the centre of your map will be. These are particularly handy if the route you want to follow will require buying 2 or more maps or you want maps of the countryside surrounding one central point on all sides e.g. the area around a campsite or accommodation or even your house! Both types of map are more expensive than basic OS Explore and OS Landranger maps.

Check your whole walk area is covered:

Select the type of map you require and then check on the map detail that your whole route is covered. The last thing you want is to realise that half your intended route is missing when you set off for your walk! If necessary you will need to get additional maps for adjoining areas. Each map has a number in the top right hand corner of the cover which along with the name is the reference you will need to select the correct map to purchase.

Buy/borrow a map:

That's it - the hard work and research is done. Now you know which map or maps you need you can order them online or buy from an outdoor shop. All you need is a compass, your hiking gear and a good day for the walk! Happy hiking!

How To Choose The Perfect Family Camping Tent

Camping has become a great summer family vacation shared by millions of families across the U.S. For many people, camping is an escape from an everyday busy life style which is why this affordable vacation option is perfect. On your camping trip there are a few things you must take into consideration. First and foremost, you will need shelter at the camp site and a safe place to sleep. Picking the perfect tent is going to take thought and effort. Here are some things to think about:

Size

When considering the size of tent you will need, don't forget to plan for the number of campers that will be taken on the trip plus all of the gear and equipment that will accompany you. To be comfortable you should plan for about 30 square feet of floor space for each individual camper. Also remember, the bigger the tent, the heavier it is going to be. If you must walk or hike to your camping location, a 14x14 foot tent could be way too heavy to comfortably carry for more than a few minutes. You will need to consider the location where you will be camping as well. Larger tents require a larger amount of smooth and level ground, and if you are not camping in an actual camp ground, it may be hard to locate the required ground.

Seasons & Weather

Tent models can accommodate 1 to 4 seasons depending on the materials and design. A four season tent is not only going to cost more, but it is much more than necessary for a family who only makes one camping trip every summer. If you are planning to camp during harsher conditions, a 3 or 4 season tent may suit you better. The decision is going to rest on what conditions and weather you will be facing on your camping adventure.

Features

As with any other product, the more features the model has, the more it is going to cost. If you like to "rough it" and added conveniences and extras don't impress you, you will more likely turn to a basic model tent. If you like to camp in luxury and enjoy extra storage spaces, conveniences like extra vestibules, or amenities like clear panel skylights, you will benefit from choosing a tent model that offers more features.

Even though there are hundreds of tent models available on the market, you can quickly and easily narrow down the selection by considering the above criteria. If you are still torn between a few models, read up on ratings and reviews to find out how each one stacks up against the competition. Because the comfort and safety of your campers is going to depend on your tent, do not tread lightly on this decision and do not settle for the cheapest model just because it's affordable.

At Camping Tents Reviews site, with our expert reviews, we help people to select the most robust and useful camping tents for their adventures. Go and visit http://www.campingtentsreviews.org/ for much more expert tips on selecting your camping tents.

How to Choose the Right Jodhpurs

Jodhpurs are an essential part of horse riding. They are designed to be flexible and comfortable. Some are made from a cotton and synthetic materials. The spandex in them helps the pants to stretch and mould to your body. They are long in length and go right down to the ankle. Some finish with a cuff, or have an elastic strap at the bottom. This fits like a stirrup and stops them from riding up. The long length goes great with a long or a short boot.

The jodhpurs have a bit more material added to the seat and inner knee. It is usually made out of suede or a synthetic suede. This stops chafing and stops your knees from slipping forward when riding. Some jodhpurs have more cushioning than others, so you will have to choose according to the type of riding that you do.

The stitching has also been cleverly designed. They either have a flat stitch or no stitching at all. The stitching is designed to stop rubbing and to prevent chafing. Doing this gives you a lot more comfort when you ride. Most jodhpurs feature a standard front hook and a zip closure, whilst others, in particular children's sizes, you can just pull them up.

Jodhpurs come in two different styles, the high waist and the hipsters. To measure properly, first you need to decided what style you prefer. Then get a tape measure and measure around your waist for the high waist design. For the hipster style you need to measure around your hips. You then measure the inseam of your leg to get the correct length for you.

Jodhpurs are a very tight fit, so whether you buy online or from a shop, you need to make sure you go one size bigger in your waist measurement and for your pants size, I always go one size bigger than my standard jeans size. Another thing to watch out for is when you try them on, check there is no gap at the waist and the patches fit right over your inner knee.

You can choose a variety of colors, which is great because the darker colors are fantastic for every day use and easy to keep clean. Make sure you check with your clubs first, because you may also need the traditional cream or lighter colors because they still are the choice for competition work.

When you first get them home they will be quite tight and a bit stiff. So give them a wash using manufacturers instructions and wear them a couple of times, you will find they will mould to your body and will start to stretch.

I also have been told by friends and other riders that are a bit bigger in size, that the jodhpurs are not very flattering on them. So if you are a bit hesitant in trying them, maybe start with a darker colors, they are a lot more slimming and also with boots they tend to balance out.

There are a lot of different styles out there as well, so you need to do a bit of research, ask other riders what brands they like and try a few pairs on. I am sure you will find a pair of jodhpurs that are comfortable and that suits you.

Some people worry about how they look in jodhpurs, it is all about comfort and to stop chaffing while you ride. People passing by don't even look at what we are wearing, the horse usually gets all the attention. So don't stress just have fun and be comfortable. Enjoy the ride and have a few different pairs of jodhpurs in your wardrobe.

Jodhpurs come in two different styles, the high waist and the hipsters. To measure properly, first you need to decided what style you prefer, then get a tape measure and measure around your waist for the high waist design and around your hips for the hipster design. How to Choose Things to Amuse Kids for a Day Care

Many day cares today are difficult for people to decide on, since the good ones are generally full and others simply cost way too much. As a result many people have decided to take on the difficult job of opening their own day care to pick up the slack others have left. Apart from the difficulty of opening one's own business, a day care is an extremely difficult business to run for many reasons. Fortunately, with just a bit of consideration and direction, the entertainment can be much easier to figure out than one may think.

The main concept in deciding on the children's entertainment is to keep it as varied as possible. Most kids develop at varying rates and some want simpler and more basic toys while others enjoy more advanced things. This is an excellent thing since kids learning to use more complex items will spark their intellectual development more. Numerous items do not lose kids' interest with time, and as such specific toys can stay around for a very long time versus others.

Video games are great, but most kids have difficulty playing them. Some kids like it, but a Playstation 3 is usually not the best to get kids to play with each other on a level playing ground. The current system that is extremely popular with kids is the Nintendo Wii since most of the titles appeal to all ages and it is not difficult and fun to control. Additionally the Wii has a lot of titles that are made for 2-4 players and allow kids to be competitive and work together toward a common goal. In addition, there are systems like the leapfrog that kids love and the video games actually teach them skills.

Some day cares have made a decision to hire teachers or create a basic curriculum to both take up the kids' time and supply a new feature for attracting new clientele. This is a fantastic way to attract customers since this gives kids a jumpstart on schooling, but has its downsides as well. Many people will not have difficulties with training kids, but if the owner wishes to hire a trained teacher, their wages can be fairly expensive.

Incorporating the top equipment and buying playground sets can be very fun for the kids. Visiting nearby playgrounds is a good way to get an idea for what kids in the area prefer. A school playground is set up well and can provide some great ideas about where to buy and what to get.

Beginner's Guide on How to Choose the Right Size Backpack

Once you have decided on the type of backpack you want to purchase the next decision is to know what length your backpack should be. This article will cover the main points of how to choose the right size backpack in length, capacity and support.

Measure Up

Before choosing the right length backpack, you will need to perform the following exercise with the help of a friend.

First locate your seventh vertebra; this is the small bony hump at the base of your neck located between your shoulders. Place a piece of tape to mark this point.

Second, locate the point at the small of your back that is level with the top of your hips and mark that point with a piece of tape.

Now get your friend to measure the distance between the two marked points and note the measurement. Your torso will fall into three backpack categories, small (under 18 in/45 cm), medium (18-20 in/45-50 cm) and large (21 in/52 cm upwards).

If your length is just on 18 in/45 cm for example, then choose the medium size pack as this will allow more room for adjustments. With the length of the backpack now sorted, the next consideration is the volume or carrying capacity of the backpack.

Carrying Capacity

This decision is dependent of what type of hiking you will be involved with. A day pack ranges from 945 to 2206 cubic inches or 15 to 35 liters.

A midsize pack range is from 2206 to 4412 cubic inches or 35 to 70 liters and may be used for overnight camping. Finally the expedition backpacks start from 3781 cubic inches or 60 liters and upwards.

The larger expedition backpacks can carry enough gear to allow you to stay on the trail for many days.

Backpack Straps and Belts

Simple shoulder straps will suffice for lighter loads but for heavier loads choose the wider and well padded shoulder straps to prevent discomfort to the shoulder area.

A Chest or Sternum Strap helps to prevent your shoulders from being pulled back and assists with load distribution.

Upper stabilizer straps do just that, stabilize the upper part of the backpack.

The hip belts of a backpack should cup your hips and when they are tightened should not touch or overlap each other.

Shoulder straps should be secured to the backpack just below the 7th vertebra and near the top of the shoulders. They should be comfortable but securely wrapped around the shoulders with the strap padding not being less than 5 inches or 12.5 centimeters below the armpits.

If you are purchasing a small-sized, day backpack they usually do not have a hip belt but as your load capacity requirement increases so does the need for a hip belt. A hip belt assists in load distribution from your shoulders to your hips.

Make sure the padding of the hip belt is soft and of a decent width to provide comfortable support and that it goes full circle under the lumbar pad and is not just attached to the sides of the backpack.
