Improve Your Speed on the Lacrosse Field With These 3 Lacrosse Workouts

If you're involved in the sport of lacrosse, performing some lacrosse workouts that will help out with speed generation capacity will be important to bring about maximum success. Speed is a critical fitness trait that is important for anyone doing lacrosse training, so something that you can easily work on developing off the field.

As long as you make sure to train hard, get good nutrition, and allow the body sufficient rest to recover, you should have no problem improving this aspect of your physical capacity.

Let's have a look at a few of the main drills to perform during your lacrosse workouts.

Field Run

The very first exercise to do during your lacrosse workouts is the field run. To do this, simply set up five pylons that span across the length of the field and then run to each one and then back as you progress through the drill.

Try and move to all five pylons in a row if you can before returning back to the starting position to take a one to two minute rest before completing it all again. Your mission is to perform this as fast as you possibly can.

Triset For Time

The second exercise to do in your Lacrosse workouts is the triset for time. With this exercise, you'll select three exercises - one upper body movement, one lower, and one core and then perform as many reps as you can for a one minute time period before resting for a two.

So you'd do bodyweight squats for a minute for example, then move into push-ups for a minute, and then do lying leg raises for a minute.

Once that was up, you'd rest for two minutes making a five minute round. Do three to four rounds per workout.

Burpee Intervals

Finally, the last of the drills to consider adding to your lacrosse workouts is a burpee interval. This is a great way to boost your power capacity and will help to improve your anaerobic performance as well.

To perform it, perform 20 burpees as fast as you can in a row and then rest for 30 seconds. Repeat ten more times through to complete the workout session.

Note that this will be a very demanding protocol, so do expect to feel quite winded during it. If you have to, use 45 second rest periods instead.

Orderly Practices Means More Discipline on the Field

It is the coach's job to make sure the team's practice goes smoothly and that the children are learning the foundations for the sport that they are playing.  For this reason, it is important that a coach has the ability to control every situation and to be able to deal with the different children's personalities on the team.  A great coach is one that maintains orderly practices and then there is more discipline one the field when it is game time.  There is a fine line that a coach has to walk to ensure the entire team is getting what they are trying to teach about the sport without becoming too boring.

One of the best things a coach can do is work drills that offer a good grasp of the basics while still showing the children that the sport can be fun.  Not every practice can be a scrimmage which is much more fun than running drills.  But if the coach makes a game of the drills, then it does not seem so bad to the children and they learn while having fun.  Keep away is a great game that is fun and for any sport, it instills defensive and offensive skills.

The coach simply needs to make sure that the children are working the skills that are being taught and not just messing around.  This is why many teams have more than one coach so that there are more eyes on the children to help them use the proper forms and to keep them in line.  Once this discipline is instilled, no matter what the situation, the children will react and act appropriately.

You can always tell a team that is not being taught the sport in an efficient way.  The children are running around, playing and screaming rather than sitting on the sidelines waiting for their turn to play or actually playing the game properly while they are on the field or pitch.  Teams that win and compete successfully are because the coach has instilled a work ethic that the children are happy to follow because the coaches are respected.

Level the Playing Field With a Good Foundation

There is no sports team or individual who plays a sport that can win without having a solid foundation in the sport of choice. If you don't know the basics, then you cannot hope to compete with those who have a better understanding of the game. Group and individual sports are taught from a traditionally young age as younger people have a tendency to learn quicker. This does not mean that older players who want to start off can't learn, but they must start with the basics as well in order to be successful. The following are some tips for keeping the foundation strong:

Work on the Basics - At least once or twice a week a team or individual should spend their training time working on drills. These drills should offer the players the opportunity to work on the skills that are rudimentary in any game or sport. For instance, the defense on a football team can work on tackling or on a baseball team the players can practice catching and throwing.
Generate Teamwork - Even outside of the sport teams should work on their teamwork skills. A team needs to work together in order to have any chance at competing. Have the team hang out together at team functions such as pizza night or other outings that don't involve playing the sport. This builds camaraderie between those players that will show when it's time to get to work.
Do Not Single Out Players - Never single out one player for either praise or rebuke when other team members are around. Speak to the team in general terms about any issues or concerns and then speak to the individuals separately when there is a specific issue with them. This keeps the team from downgrading them and promotes the teamwork you are working so hard to achieve. Also, singling out a specific player can either give them a huge ego which will not stand well later in their career or it can undermine them to the point that they want to quit.

Playing sports should be fun as well as competitive and any great sports team or player knows that the basics are the foundation. Working on the foundation during practice is the best way to have a chance at success in the future. Make sure to promote teamwork and never single out players if you want the team to be cohesive.
