The Big Bird Watching Adventure

My cousin, a friend and I snuck through two fences and onto a local farmer's property. We instantly saw a huge pile of freshly strewn hay next to the wall. I readied myself for a full sprint while the more "girly" girls just watched. On my way, the farmer came around the corner on his tractor. Seeing the two trespassers at the edge of his property, he shouted "hey, what are you doing?" Or something to that effect, I can't be sure because at the time I was quickly scooting up the ladder. I made it to the top just in time to hide away from view.

After concealing myself in the loft I looked up. On the other side of the hayloft there was the most beautiful and the largest bird I had ever seen. Staring at me with wide, unblinking golden eyes the creature, which I later found out was a Barn Owl, calmly assessed the threat I posed. Deciding the answer to be "none whatsoever", she remained.

Easily three and a half feet tall, she had a spectacularly hooked beak and bright yellow talons. She was magnificent! Scared that the farmer would do something horrible like call my parents, I quickly ran to the opposite wall and leapt. I was confident that the hay would cushion my fall. I leapt out the window without looking down. The drop took three seconds, which was just long enough to realize that Mr. Farmer had moved the hay.

Luckily I landed safely with no broken bones. I dashed off to the safety of my side of the woods.

This story illustrates precisely the difference between bird watching and birding. The first is passive while the second active sometimes, as was the case with my example, spectacularly so.

People everywhere are discovering for themselves what I did that fine morning. Active pursuit, goal oriented destinations, and planning can bring wonderful color into your life. Birds of all shapes, colors, sizes and dispositions are everywhere!

The best way to begin is with observing. When you notice movement quickly rotate your eyes then your head in the direction you pinpoint. Then once you have the target in sight follow this pattern:

a. What color is the bird's head? Is it a peaked crown or cap?

b. How big is the bird? Measure it out to the best of your abilities.

c. Are there any special body colorings or markings?

d. What is the leg color and are they long in relation to the body?

It does not matter if you cannot identify the visitor right then and there. You can easily look it up in your manual later!

Insider Guide to Adrenaline Sports

Adrenaline is a hormone secreted by the adrenal gland in response to stress. It increases heart rate, opens up air passages, constricts blood vessels and stimulates our fight-or-flight response. In other words, it's a bloody rush. The feeling one gets with a rush of adrenaline just can't be duplicated. When one is near the edge, the mind is focused and clear and you're living in the moment.

Adrenaline or extreme sports and activities give us that primal jolt that reminds us that we are alive. Feeling the g-forces in a turn while driving an exotic car or leaping out of a plane with a bit of cloth to ensure we don't die are moments we don't soon forget. How many utterly forgettable moments did you have today?

Thanks to growing demand, there is a whole industry emerging dedicated to providing experiences to ordinary folks who are yearning to live on the edge. These activities involve danger and risk, generally due to high-speeds, outrageous heights, extreme conditions or most often a combination of all. There are different levels of course and while some activities don't necessarily represent truly dangerous activities, for those not use to activity, the rush is all the same.

Intrigued? If so, it's pretty easy to find an outlet for your need. The Internet is a great place to research what's available. Some of these adventures can get pretty expensive, but there is something to get the heart racing for everyone.

Some lower cost rushes can be had for those on a budget. Mountain biking, rock climbing and surfing have elements of danger and don't cost a lot to get started. The nice thing about these types of extreme sports is that you'll find yourself in better shape. Also, the better you become the more adrenaline-pumping risks you can take.

For those with a bigger wallet, there are a lot of daylong rushes one can get. Skydiving, parasailing, bungee-jumping and hang-gliding are activities that one can do without extensive training or instruction. In most cases you'll go up with an instructor or go through intensive instruction before being thrown over. Most areas have local services. As long as you're in reasonably good shape and have the cash to put down, all these activities can be enjoyed.

Motor sports are also a day or two activities that can get the heart pumping. Some places allow you to drive an exotic car or race car at a track. A few specialize in stunt driving and evasion tactics. If motorcycles are your thing, the same activities can be done on two wheels. Not only can you get an adrenaline rush, but you'll significantly raise your driving skills and maybe learn how to avoid a kidnapping attempt.

Farther up the extreme chain are sports and activities like kite boarding, windsurfing, base jumping and extreme skiing and snowboarding. These require more significant investment in time, money, equipment and effort, but quite a rush can be had. These are the activities that become lifelong passions.

Finally there are those once in a lifetime activities like climbing Everest or other big mountains or running with the bulls in Pamplona. These also require significant investment and involve real risk and danger. But look, there's something to be said about these types of experiences - if you make it you'll have a hell of a story to tell your grandchildren.

3 Tips to Becoming a Better Clearing Lacrosse Goalie

As a lacrosse goalie, clearing the ball up the lacrosse field is one of your most important jobs. It doesn't really matter if you save the ball like an MLL goalie if you can't move the ball up the field.

When your team is getting ready to clear, it is important for you to take an active role in the clear. A lacrosse goalie is a lot like a quarterback in football. It is their job to communicate and facilitate the clear up the field. This starts before the whistle blows by making sure that the whole team is set up and in position.

Here are three steps to become a better clearing goalie:

Use the Crease

When your team is setup for a settled clear, the goal is use your extra man advantage. There are six offensive players on the field and seven defensive players. This means that you as the goalie have to work to create distance from the player covering you.

One easy way is to line up the ball, the attack men on you, the goal, and yourself all in a row. Now you can use the crease like a screen and cut toward your teammate for the pass.

Play Dumb

This is a funny little trick. Start just milling around the crease like you're not really sure what is going on. Try to bait the attack men into paying more attention to the player with the ball than to you. As the whistle blows and the attack men looks way, make your break to an open passing lane.

Using this technique is a great way to get a step or two on your attack men. Most of the time, this is all that it takes to gain an edge.

V-Cut

As the seventh man in your clearing squad, it is so important for you to be working for the ball. If an attack men is covering you close, work him by continuing to v-cut for the feed. This will help you out in two ways. First it will help create separation for a pass. When your teammate has the ball, they are going to be trying to move the ball up the field as quickly as possible. V-cutting can help you get open and receive their pass. The other way v-cutting helps you is that is can occupy your defender, allowing the defense to continue the clear with a man advantage.

Remember, always be a threat. You're always working!

5 Summer Camping Tips

Imagine the sounds of waves crashing against California beaches with seagulls flying in the air. Picture fly fishing in the Colorado River, hiking in the Grand Canyon, playing sports outside while munching on some watermelon and/or swimming in a lake. What do these descriptions symbolize? In my eyes, summer vacation. This is the time to plan a fun-filled, happy and safe camping trip. But before you engage in this common summer activity, please keep the following tidbits on-hand. These tips will help you enjoy your trip to the fullest.

Bring Stainless Steel Cookware
The last thing you want to do is lug around heavy cooking equipment and/or too much of it. Consolidate by using this type of steel cookware. It is light, resilient and easy to clean. Those are three traits you need when selecting materials and tools to use for preparing food under extreme temperatures and conditions. It may be very hot over the fire and having durable material to work with makes a difference. it can determine whether you are going to bed in the woods hungry or falling asleep in your tent under the stars on a full stomach. Also, it can be used for a wide variety of purposes including holding and preparing hot and cold liquids.

What Type of Thermos Do You Need?
Stainless steel is able to preserve your drinks in whatever state you need. If it needs to remain cold then it shall. If you need it hot then this piece of equipment does the trick. These thermoses satisfy the vital requirements you need for outdoor compatible drinking containers. You may also use these for alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks alike. It is long lasting, rust-resistant, and withstands the bumping it may endure while climbing, hiking and rafting.

Pick Up After Yourself
This is the high season for brush fires so please pick up your own trash. Do not leave anything behind. Additionally, food scraps and crumbs invite unwanted guests. It is a welcoming party for wild animals. Dispose of food and drinks appropriately to ensure outside critters stay away.

Pack a Tarp
You never know how quickly the weather can change. Be prepared. Bring a tarp to cover your eating and sleeping areas. It protects the necessary items ensuring you have a healthy and happy camping trip.

Got Socks?
If you are at the beach then there is no reason to fret over this piece of advice. If your trip involves much hiking then do not forget to bring an extra pair of socks. Socks protect your feet from blisters, cuts and scrapes, which may lead to a serious infection. Guard your feet from succumbing to such circumstances by carrying additional socks.

If you follow one rule from the above then please make it this, bring stainless steel products with you. It is a metal that does not exhibit flimsy traits under a wide array of environments. Choose wisely and make this summer camping trip your best yet.

Which Map? How to Choose the Right Ordnance Survey (OS) Map

The walk location is decided, you know how long you want to be out for and you've brushed up on your map reading skills. It's time to get a map and plot the route. In the UK this means using an Ordnance Survey map which shows all the footpaths, features and topographic detail you will need to complete any forray into the countryside safely and successfully. There is not just one Ordnance Survey map for each area however but a choice of different series of maps, all showing different levels of detail, scales or usages. So how do you select the right Ordnance Survey map for your walk? Here are a few pointers to help you choose:

Select the correct map for your walk:

You have two main choices of paper map - the Ordnance Survey (OS) Explorer or the Ordnance (OS) Landranger. Other maps are available such as street atlases, historical or specialised activity maps but for hiking or walking you will need one of the above in order to provide enough detail to navigate from.

The OS Explorer map series is the most popular choice and an essential for longer or more complex walks or those going off the beaten track. It is highly detailed and shows all rights of way, footpaths, landscape and interest features and contours. Every house, public facility or point of interest is covered giving you all the tools you need to locate yourself as well as finding that nearest pub for a drink after a hard days walking! The scale is 1:25000 - that is 1cm on the map equates to 250m on the ground (4cm per km or 2 1/2 inches to a mile)

The OS Landranger map series covers a wider area with a scale of 1:50000 (that's 1cm on the map to every 500m on the ground, 2cm per km or 1 1/4 inches to the mile). This makes it handy for planning a day out over a broader area and for getting a good picture of where you are going and it shows the main footpaths and rights of way as well as tourist information and points of interest. However it doesn't contain as much detail as the OS Explorer range and if you are going off into the wilds you will need the detail of the Explorer map to navigate with confidence.

There are other options worth knowing about: firstly the Active Maps which come in both Landranger and Explorer ranges and have a laminated, waterproof cover to protect your map from the rain and elements when out and about; secondly there are the custom-made maps which allow you to choose where the centre of your map will be. These are particularly handy if the route you want to follow will require buying 2 or more maps or you want maps of the countryside surrounding one central point on all sides e.g. the area around a campsite or accommodation or even your house! Both types of map are more expensive than basic OS Explore and OS Landranger maps.

Check your whole walk area is covered:

Select the type of map you require and then check on the map detail that your whole route is covered. The last thing you want is to realise that half your intended route is missing when you set off for your walk! If necessary you will need to get additional maps for adjoining areas. Each map has a number in the top right hand corner of the cover which along with the name is the reference you will need to select the correct map to purchase.

Buy/borrow a map:

That's it - the hard work and research is done. Now you know which map or maps you need you can order them online or buy from an outdoor shop. All you need is a compass, your hiking gear and a good day for the walk! Happy hiking!

Baby Routes is a website for outdoor parents looking for walking routes and information about getting out and enjoying the Great Outdoors with kids. For more information on hiking, walking with children, walking routes or outdoor gear and product reviews visit babyroutes.com

Importance of Character in Sports Performance

I do not think there is a Viagra pill that can suddenly rid sports of all its ills and infuse such spirits that would catapult sportsperson to ultimate glory. Such short-term measures may show instant results momentarily, but not repeatedly. They will not make a champion out of you. There are no quick-fix solutions.

I am looking at a holistic view of improving sporting activity, nurturing the talent available, assisting them in achieving excellence in their discipline and also preparing them for a productive life after their "sporting life" is over. In the process of creating excellent sportsperson, I also have a dream of molding their character and personalities which would not only stand them in good stead during an active sporting carrier but throughout life. There is an incredible talent that we can ill-afford to ignore.

I have a vision that someone should take under their wings, without disturbing the existing structure of "training", all young potential sportsperson in the age group of 8 years to 14 years and 15 years to 21/25 years, for imparting soft skills and emotional literacy. The literacy should be provided continuously as a 'course' during their sporting-skill training at Centers. Subject-specific workshops must also be conducted at regular intervals. The idea is to in-grain these skills into their psyche that they automatically begin to 'live' these skills. The sports fields should be their 'classrooms' where they learn to be soft-skill-and-emotionally literate sportsperson.

It is widely accepted that sports and games provide lessons for soft skill and personality/character development. In fact, games and sports serve as a resource to teach soft skills in management and other educational institutions. When a sportsperson participates in competitive games and sports, he tends to unconsciously learn and develop his soft skills. By the time he is proficient in these skills his active sporting life is over. He gets no opportunity to use these skills to contribute to excellence in his chosen sports discipline. It is too late. I recommend some 'reverse engineering' merely by changing the timing of his exposure. Whilst developing sporting skills, the sportsperson should be imparted soft skills and emotional literacy side-by-side. When he graduates into a team of some 'level', it must be with all these skills in place. Thereafter, he has ample opportunity to contribute to individual or team excellence as the case may be. And of course, his skills are not only used to achieve excellence, but also fine-tuned and improved upon with live experience.

I have tentatively identified important defining skills for sportsperson involved with:-

Team sports

- Reliability

- Constructive Communication

- Active Listening

- Active Participation

- Sharing Openly and Willingly

- Cooperation and Helpfulness

- Flexibility

- Commitment

- Problem solving

- Respectful and Supportive

Individual Sports

- Goal Setting

- Decision-Making

- Communication

- Conflict Management

- Time Management

- Execution

Emotional Intelligence/Literacy (both team and individual)

- Emotional Self Awareness

- Accurate Self Assessment

- Self Confidence

- Emotional Self Control

- Empathy

- Influencing Others

The final set of skills to be imparted will be decided consequent to a Detailed Needs Analysis and after necessary interaction with the athletes and coaching/support staff.

Most people involved in sport agree that proper behavior makes the sport better and that character matters. While there is a great amount of attention paid today to ideals of sportsmanship, or positive relational character - respecting self, teammates, opponents, and the game - little consideration is paid to the influence that an athlete's or coach's character actually has on performance. Besides the evolution of "sportsmanship" programs which are intended to heighten awareness about the realities of sport today - the relationship between character and performance is seldom addressed. Despite the logical link between character and performance, many coaches dismiss this as an intangible factor that is immeasurable!

Performance and relational character are not mutually exclusive. 'Performance character' focuses on the diligence, perseverance, and self-discipline necessary to a commitment to academic, athletic, and other areas of excellence. 'Moral or relational character' embodies the traits of integrity, justice, caring, and respect - needed for successful interpersonal relationships and ethical behavior.

Character strengths such as hope, perseverance, creativity, and zest are but a few traits which, when habituated, provide sport participants the greatest opportunity to improve performance and enjoyment. Hope is about goal-setting and optimism, creativity is about finding alternative strategies to improve performance, and zest is about the enthusiasm that players and coaches bring to the field.

An athlete who has developed a strong character can call on a foundation of well-formed habits in aspiring to true excellence. The competition of the sports arena, together with a personal goal to optimize performance, challenges the athlete to continually stretch his or her abilities through deliberate practice, a focused and effort-full rehearsal. We must 'will' good habits and improved skills; we cannot just 'wish' them to happen. What separates successful performers from others is the ability to make the most of what they can control in their aspirations for optimal performance. This does not mean that anyone can become an elite athlete, but it does mean that athletes can strive to perform to the best of their ability levels - aspiring to excellence as individuals and as members of a team.
